N.J. man admits mailbox thefts of $1.5M in checks, money orders

A New Jersey man admitted he used stolen mailbox keys to swipe more than $1.5 million in checks and money orders from collection boxes in two Connecticut cities in a six-month span.
Ixavier Holman Jr. pleaded guilty to theft of mail on Wednesday, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Connecticut said.
Holman Jr., of Secaucus, was arrested June 12, 2023 at a post office on New Haven after being found with two keys.
He used the keys to remove mail from blue collection boxes at the New Haven post office and two locations in neighboring West Haven between December 2022 and June 2023, federal prosecutors said.
Authorities later searched Holman’s home and found more than 3,000 pieces of mail, United States Postal Service mail collection bins as well as a credit card reader and embosser.
The mail was sorted and organized by bank, officials said.
Investigators combed through surveillance footage from the area of the thefts, fingerprints left behind and license plate readers from three vehicles to nab Holman, according to charging documents.
Most of the thefts took place in the 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. hours, court papers state. Prosecutors didn’t say how Holman Jr, obtained the keys.
Holman is free on bond ahead of his sentencing scheduled for March 12 in Hartford. He faces up to five years in federal prison.
